Arsenicum Album — prepared from white arsenic trioxide — is one of the most extensively studied and widely prescribed remedies in classical homeopathy. It is a true polychrest: a remedy with a broad, deep action that touches nearly every organ system. Understanding its core theme unlocks its enormous therapeutic range.
The Source: Arsenic Trioxide
Arsenicum Album is prepared from Arsenious oxide (As₂O₃) — a compound notorious in history as a poison. In crude doses, arsenic produces severe symptoms: burning pains, vomiting, diarrhoea, exhaustion, anxiety, and restlessness. Hahnemann recognised that the remedy picture — what the substance produces in healthy individuals — mirrors the very conditions it can cure in sick ones.
Through the process of potentisation (serial dilution and succussion), the toxic substance is transformed into a therapeutic agent with no toxic effects. The 30C potency, commonly used, contains none of the original molecule — yet the therapeutic information appears to be preserved in a form we do not yet fully understand.
The Core Theme: Security, Control, and the Fear of Death
Every polychrest has a central existential theme that runs through its entire picture. For Arsenicum Album, this theme is insecurity — and the desperate need for control and order as a response to a profound fear of death and disease.
The Arsenicum person experiences the world as fundamentally dangerous and unpredictable. They respond to this anxiety by becoming:
- Fastidiously neat and orderly — their home and desk are immaculate; disorder produces visible distress
- Deeply anxious about health — health anxiety is central; they fear cancer, serious disease, and especially death
- Dependent on others — despite their controlling nature, they fear being alone, especially at night
- Restless — they cannot settle; they move from place to place, room to room, without finding comfort
- Financially anxious — miserly, concerned about financial security; fear of poverty even when wealthy
- Critical and demanding — high standards for self and others; easily dissatisfied
This constitutional picture informs both its acute uses and its deep chronic applications.
The Universal Keynotes of Arsenicum Album
These keynotes run through virtually every Arsenicum condition, regardless of the organ system affected:
- 🔥Burning pains relieved by heat — the pains burn intensely, yet warm applications soothe them. This is one of Arsenicum's most defining features and distinguishes it from many similar remedies.
- 🌙Worse after midnight (1–3 AM) — symptoms intensify in the early hours. The patient wakes anxious, restless, unable to return to sleep.
- 😰Intense anxiety and restlessness — the physical and mental restlessness are inseparable. The patient moves, fidgets, changes position constantly without relief.
- 💧Watery, acrid, burning discharges — whether from the nose, eyes, bowels, or skin — discharges are thin, watery, and burn the surrounding tissue.
- 😴Profound weakness and prostration — exhaustion out of proportion to the illness; the patient is debilitated, even collapse-like in acute states.
- 🥶Chilly constitution — desires warmth; feels the cold intensely; yet the head may prefer cool.
- 👥Fear of being alone — especially at night; needs company, reassurance; the restlessness is worse in solitude.
Acute Uses of Arsenicum Album
Food Poisoning & Gastroenteritis
This is Arsenicum's most famous acute application. The picture is: violent vomiting and diarrhoea occurring simultaneously; burning pains in the stomach; extreme prostration; intense thirst for small sips of water (large quantities aggravate); anxiety and restlessness; worse at midnight; chilliness despite the burning pains. This matches the typical presentation of acute food poisoning almost perfectly.
Allergic Rhinitis & Hay Fever
Arsenicum is one of the leading remedies for allergic rhinitis: thin, watery nasal discharge that burns the upper lip and surrounding skin; violent sneezing; watery, burning eye discharge; the nose feels blocked yet keeps running. Symptoms are worse outdoors (from pollen) and at night. The constitutional anxiety and chilliness support the choice.
Asthma
Arsenicum is a key asthma remedy when attacks occur at midnight or 1–3 AM; there is great anxiety and fear of suffocation; the patient sits up, cannot lie down; there is burning in the chest; wheezing; and extreme restlessness and prostration. Often follows allergic rhinitis (the "ascending catarrh" going to the chest).
Anxiety Disorders
Arsenicum is a first-line homeopathic remedy for health anxiety and generalised anxiety disorder with the characteristic picture: fear of death and serious illness, restlessness, worse at night, need for reassurance, fastidiousness, and physical symptoms that accompany the anxiety (palpitations, gastric disturbance, breathlessness).
Skin Conditions
Eczema, psoriasis, urticaria with burning and itching that is worse at night and worse from cold; skin that is dry, rough, scaling; burning relieved by heat. The skin may look rough and unhealthy, tending toward chronicity.
Arsenicum as a Constitutional Remedy
In chronic prescribing, Arsenicum is one of the most important constitutional remedies. The constitutional Arsenicum patient may be driven, anxious, perfectionistic, and health-conscious. They often have a history of multiple health concerns, a tendency to worry excessively, and great fastidiousness. Physically, they tend to be lean, chilly, and easily exhausted.
At the deepest level, their anxiety is existential — about death, meaninglessness, and losing control. Constitutional Arsenicum treatment addresses this root insecurity, gradually shifting the person toward greater trust and less need for control.

Differentiating Arsenicum from Similar Remedies
- vs Phosphorus — both anxious, both fear death, both want company. Phosphorus is warm, open, extroverted, sympathetic; Arsenicum is chilly, fastidious, and their anxiety is more self-centred and controlling.
- vs Veratrum Album — also has vomiting, diarrhoea, prostration; but Veratrum has cold sweat, coldness, and the prostration is more complete; less burning, less restlessness.
- vs Nux Vomica — both are chilly, both are anxious and controlling; Nux is more angry and irritable, worse in the morning, from stimulants; Arsenicum is more fearful, worse after midnight.
- vs Rhus Toxicodendron — both restless; Rhus restlessness is driven by pain relieved by motion; Arsenicum restlessness is driven by anxiety.
