It is one of the most common suspicions voiced in our clinic: "Doctor, are you sure there are no steroids in these medicines?" This question deserves a serious, honest answer — because the fear is understandable, and the answer matters for every patient choosing homeopathic care.
Where Does This Suspicion Come From?
The suspicion has two sources — one legitimate, one based on misunderstanding. The legitimate source: there have been documented cases, particularly in South Asia and parts of Southeast Asia, of unscrupulous practitioners mixing corticosteroids (like dexamethasone or betamethasone) into what they claim are homeopathic formulations. Regulatory investigations by India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation have confirmed such adulterations in small-batch, unbranded preparations sold by unlicensed vendors.
When patients experience rapid, dramatic improvement in conditions like eczema, arthritis, or asthma within 24-48 hours of starting a new "homeopathic" treatment, they are right to ask questions. Steroid contamination of this kind is real, it does happen, and it has caused serious harm to patients who had no idea they were being exposed to potent corticosteroids without monitoring.
These incidents are crimes. They are also a profound betrayal of what classical homeopathy actually is. They have, understandably, cast suspicion on the entire field — including licensed, registered practitioners who practise classical constitutional homeopathy with complete integrity.
What Homeopathic Medicines Actually Are
Classical homeopathic medicines are ultra-dilute preparations of plant, mineral, or animal substances, processed through a specific method of serial dilution and vigorous shaking (succussion) known as potentisation. A 30C potency, one of the most commonly prescribed, has been diluted 1:100 thirty times — a dilution so extreme that no molecules of the original substance are detectable by conventional chemistry.
In India, homeopathic medicines are regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and must conform to standards set by the Indian Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. Equivalent standards exist globally — the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS) and the German Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia (GHP). Medicines manufactured by established pharmaceutical companies like SBL, Schwabe India, and Boiron are manufactured in licensed facilities with documented quality control.
There are no steroids in properly manufactured homeopathic medicines. There are no active pharmaceutical ingredients at pharmacological doses. The preparation contains the potentised substance, alcohol (as a preservative in liquid preparations), and in the case of pills, sucrose or lactose as the carrier medium. Nothing else.
How Steroids Work — And Why They Are So Different
Corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that act by binding to glucocorticoid receptors inside cells, altering gene expression to suppress immune activation, reduce inflammation, and modulate a wide range of physiological processes. They are powerful, fast-acting, and pharmacologically well-understood.
When someone is exposed to corticosteroids — even unknowingly — the physiological signature is measurable and characteristic. Weight gain and redistribution (particularly facial and abdominal fat), fluid retention, elevated blood glucose levels, suppression of the adrenal axis, and increased susceptibility to infection are the hallmarks of systemic corticosteroid exposure. With prolonged use, more serious effects emerge: osteoporosis, cataracts, and adrenal suppression that requires careful medical management when steroids are withdrawn.
A genuine homeopathic remedy — correctly manufactured and prescribed — cannot produce any of these effects. Not because it is weak, but because it contains no steroid molecules. The mechanisms are entirely different. Homeopathy is theorised to work through an energetic or information-based mechanism (the nature of which remains scientifically debated), not through pharmacological receptor binding.
How to Protect Yourself as a Patient
How to Verify Your Medicines
- 1. Choose a registered practitioner. Verify your homeopath holds a BHMS degree (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) or MD (Hom) — both are regulated postgraduate qualifications in India. Registration with the State Homeopathic Medical Council is mandatory for legal practice.
- 2. Buy from established brands. Medicines from SBL, Schwabe India, Boiron, Dr. Reckeweg, and similar established companies are manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions with documented quality control. Avoid unbranded loose preparations from unlicensed vendors.
- 3. Ask questions if improvement is unusually rapid. Genuine acute homeopathic results can be rapid — but dramatic improvement in a longstanding chronic skin or joint condition within 24-48 hours of a new remedy should prompt a question. Ask your practitioner to show you the medicine bottle and its labelling.
- 4. Request ingredient transparency. Every legitimate homeopathic prescription should be documented: remedy name, potency, and dispensing pharmacy. If your practitioner cannot or will not name what they have given you, this is a red flag.
Classical Homeopathy vs. Mixed Formulations
It is important to distinguish between two categories that are often conflated. Classical constitutional homeopathy — as taught in BHMS programmes and practised at clinics like HealthKunj — involves the prescription of a single remedy, in a single potency, selected individually for each patient based on their complete symptom picture. The source of the remedy is known, the preparation is standard, and the prescription is documented.
Commercial "combination homeopathic" products — multi-ingredient tablets or syrups marketed for specific conditions — exist in a different regulatory category. Some of these products are perfectly safe and legitimate; others may contain non-homeopathic ingredients not fully disclosed on the label. This is particularly true of some over-the-counter preparations sold in pharmacies without a prescription.
Classical constitutional homeopathy, prescribed by a qualified and registered practitioner, and dispensed from a licensed homeopathic pharmacy, carries none of the contamination risks associated with unregulated commercial formulations.
What Rapid Improvement in Homeopathy Actually Means
This is worth addressing directly, because genuine rapid improvement does occur in homeopathy — particularly in acute conditions. When a well-matched remedy is prescribed for an acute fever, a sudden respiratory illness, or an acute skin flare, improvement can begin within hours. This is not steroids. This is a correctly selected remedy stimulating the organism's self-regulatory capacity.
The distinguishing features are telling. Steroid-mediated improvement comes with characteristic side effects: the face may become rounder, appetite increases markedly, sleep changes, blood sugar may rise, and withdrawal of the substance brings rapid return of symptoms — often with rebound worsening. Constitutional homeopathic improvement comes with improved overall energy and vitality, better sleep, improved mood, and a general sense of wellbeing that extends beyond the presenting complaint.
Classical homeopathy does not suppress — it curates. When the vital force responds to a well-matched remedy, the improvement is felt systemically, not just locally. This is one of the most reliable clinical indicators that genuine homeopathic action is taking place, as distinct from pharmacological suppression.
