Phosphorus 30 & 200: Uses, Benefits and Dosage

Dr. Meera ThakurOctober 20267 min read

Phosphorus is a classic constitutional remedy for open, warm, sympathetic people who light up a room — and who are just as easily drained, frightened or overwhelmed. Physically it is known for chest complaints, easy bleeding and a craving for cold drinks.

The Phosphorus person

  • Open and affectionate, sympathetic, artistic; needs company and reassurance.
  • Fears — of being alone, of the dark, of thunderstorms, and of illness.
  • Craves cold drinks, ice cream and salty or spicy food; may vomit water once it warms in the stomach.
  • Tends to bleed easily — nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy periods, easy bruising.
  • Burning sensations — in the stomach, chest or between the shoulder blades.

Traditionally indicated for

Cough and hoarseness

Dry, tickling cough with tightness of the chest, hoarseness, worse lying on the left side and in cold air.

Nosebleeds and easy bleeding

Bright red bleeding from small causes — considered alongside medical assessment of the cause.

Acidity and stomach

Burning in the stomach, better from cold drinks that may be vomited later.

Anxiety and fears

Anxious when alone, at dusk or in storms; better from company and reassurance.

Hair fall

Hair falling in bunches, with an itchy, dry scalp.

After illness

Weakness and exhaustion after a long illness or blood loss.

Phosphorus 30 vs Phosphorus 200: Uses and Differences

Phosphorus is a deep-acting remedy used most often in 30C and 200C. Homeopaths tend to use it carefully and avoid frequent repetition of higher potencies.

⚠️

Crude phosphorus is toxic; only properly potentised preparations are safe. Bleeding that is heavy, recurrent or unexplained (frequent nosebleeds, blood in sputum, vomit or stool, very heavy periods) needs medical evaluation first. Breathlessness or chest pain needs emergency care.

PotencyGenerally used forHow it is usually used
Phosphorus 30Acute complaints that fit the Phosphorus picture — dry cough with hoarseness, burning acidity, anxiety and fears.Used for a short period as a homeopath advises; not repeated often.
Phosphorus 200Constitutional treatment of a clear Phosphorus type with recurring chest, bleeding or anxiety tendencies.Given infrequently, usually as single doses spaced weeks apart, chosen by a practitioner.

This is general materia medica information, not a prescription. Potency, dose and how often to repeat it should be set by a qualified homeopath after a full case assessment.

Using homeopathic medicines safely

Keep medicines out of reach of children. Store them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and strong smells such as camphor, menthol or perfume. Don't exceed the dose or frequency your homeopath advises, and seek advice if symptoms get markedly worse.

Phosphorus: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Phosphorus 30 used for?▾

Phosphorus 30 is traditionally used for dry, tickling cough with hoarseness and chest tightness, burning acidity relieved by cold drinks, and anxiety when alone, when the overall Phosphorus picture fits. The right potency and how often to take it depend on your full case, so a qualified homeopath should decide this.

What is Phosphorus 200 used for?▾

Phosphorus 200 is generally used constitutionally for people with the Phosphorus temperament and recurring chest complaints, easy bleeding or fears. It is used sparingly and chosen by a homeopath.

Is Phosphorus used for nosebleeds?▾

It is one of the remedies considered for bright red nosebleeds from small causes. Frequent or heavy nosebleeds should first be checked by a doctor for blood pressure, clotting or nasal causes.

Can Phosphorus be repeated often?▾

Homeopaths usually avoid frequent repetition of Phosphorus, especially in higher potencies. Follow your homeopath's advice on how often to take it.
