Thyroid Foods to Avoid — and a Simple Thyroid Diet Chart

Dr. Meera ThakurOctober 20268 min read

Most thyroid 'foods to avoid' lists are too strict. A handful of foods genuinely matter — mainly because of iodine, or because they stop your thyroid tablet being absorbed. The rest can usually be eaten in normal, cooked amounts.

First: timing your thyroid tablet

For people on levothyroxine (Thyronorm, Eltroxin and others), when you eat matters as much as what you eat:

  • Take the tablet with plain water on an empty stomach, 30–60 minutes before breakfast or tea.
  • Keep calcium, iron and multivitamin supplements and antacids at least 4 hours away from the tablet.
  • Coffee, soy milk and high-fibre breakfasts taken too soon can reduce absorption — wait the full 30–60 minutes.
  • Be consistent. Your doctor sets the dose around your routine, so a stable routine keeps your TSH stable.

Hypothyroidism: foods to avoid or limit

FoodWhy it mattersWhat to do
Soy (soya chunks, tofu, soy milk)Can reduce absorption of the thyroid tabletEat in moderation and keep it well away from the tablet; don't make sudden big changes
Raw cruciferous vegetables in large amounts (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, sarson)Contain goitrogens that matter mainly with iodine deficiencyNormal cooked portions are fine; avoid large raw quantities, e.g. daily raw cabbage juice
Bajra (pearl millet) as the main daily grainGoitrogenic in large amounts, especially with low iodineRotate grains: wheat, jowar, ragi, rice, bajra
Kelp, seaweed and iodine supplementsExcess iodine can worsen some thyroid conditionsIodised salt is enough; avoid extra iodine unless your doctor prescribes it
Ultra-processed and fried foodAdds weight, which is already harder to manage with hypothyroidismKeep to occasional treats

Hyperthyroidism: foods to be careful with

  • Excess iodine — seaweed, kelp tablets and iodine-containing supplements. If you're preparing for radioactive iodine treatment, your doctor may give you a temporary low-iodine diet.
  • Caffeine — tea, coffee and energy drinks can worsen palpitations, tremor and anxiety.
  • Too little food — an overactive thyroid burns energy fast; eat regular, adequate meals to avoid weight and muscle loss.
  • Calcium and vitamin D — overactive thyroid can thin bones; include curd, milk, paneer, ragi and til.

Sample thyroid diet chart (hypothyroidism, vegetarian)

TimeMeal
On wakingThyroid tablet with water; nothing else for 30–60 minutes
BreakfastVegetable poha or upma with peanuts, or besan chilla; a fruit
Mid-morningButtermilk or a handful of nuts (1–2 Brazil nuts are a source of selenium; don't eat more)
LunchJowar or wheat roti, dal, cooked sabzi, salad of cucumber and carrot, curd
EveningRoasted chana or makhana; tea
DinnerMoong dal khichdi with vegetables, or roti with paneer bhurji and sabzi

Gluten-free diets help thyroid patients only if they also have coeliac disease. Don't cut out whole food groups without a reason.

Homeopathy alongside thyroid treatment

Homeopathic care looks at the symptoms that often persist even when TSH is controlled — tiredness, weight, hair fall, mood, cold sensitivity and periods. A constitutional remedy is chosen alongside your thyroid tablets, and your TSH is monitored by your doctor. Never change your thyroid dose on your own. See thyroid treatment at HealthKunj and thyroid treatment in Pune.

See a doctor if you notice

A visible swelling or lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or symptoms that change sharply after a dose change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What foods should be avoided in thyroid?▾

With hypothyroidism: soy close to your tablet, large amounts of raw cruciferous vegetables, bajra as your only grain, and extra iodine supplements. With hyperthyroidism: excess iodine and caffeine. Most other foods are fine in normal portions.

Can thyroid patients eat cabbage and cauliflower?▾

Yes, cooked and in normal portions. Their goitrogens matter mainly with iodine deficiency or very large raw amounts, such as daily raw cabbage juice.

Can I drink tea or coffee with thyroid?▾

Yes, but wait 30–60 minutes after your thyroid tablet. If you have an overactive thyroid, cut down on caffeine because it can worsen palpitations and anxiety.

Is curd good for thyroid patients?▾

Yes, curd is a good source of protein and calcium. Just keep calcium-rich foods and calcium supplements well away from your thyroid tablet.

Should thyroid patients avoid iodised salt?▾

No. Iodised salt is the right source of iodine for most people. What to avoid is extra iodine from kelp, seaweed or supplements unless a doctor prescribes it.
