Hair is made of protein and grows fastest when the body has spare resources. When the diet runs short of protein, iron or a few key vitamins, hair is one of the first things the body economises on — usually as extra shedding two to three months later.
The nutrients hair needs most
Protein
Hair is mostly keratin, a protein. Aim for a protein food at every meal: dal, chana, rajma, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken, soya, sprouts.
Iron
Low iron stores (ferritin) are one of the most common reasons for diffuse hair fall in women. Sources: green leafy vegetables, rajma, chana, til, dates, eggs, meat. Pair with vitamin C for absorption.
Zinc
Supports hair tissue growth and repair. Sources: pumpkin seeds, sesame, cashews, chana, whole grains, eggs.
Vitamin D
Low vitamin D is common in India despite the sun. Morning sunlight, eggs, fish and fortified foods help; test before taking high-dose supplements.
Vitamin B12
Vegetarians often run low. Sources: milk, curd, paneer, eggs, fish; many people need a supplement prescribed by their doctor.
Omega-3 fats
Support scalp health. Sources: flaxseed (alsi), walnuts, chia seeds, fatty fish.
Vitamin C
Helps the body absorb plant iron. Sources: amla, guava, lemon, orange, tomato — add lemon to dal and sabzi.
Biotin
True deficiency is rare. Biotin supplements can also distort thyroid and other blood test results, so tell your doctor if you take them.
A hair-friendly day of eating
| Meal | Example |
|---|---|
| Morning | Soaked almonds and walnuts, a teaspoon of roasted flax or pumpkin seeds |
| Breakfast | Moong dal chilla with paneer, or eggs with whole-wheat toast; an amla or a guava |
| Lunch | Rajma or chana with brown rice or roti, palak or methi sabzi with lemon, curd |
| Evening | Sprouts chaat, roasted chana, or a glass of milk |
| Dinner | Dal, sabzi, roti; fish, chicken or paneer a few times a week |
What makes hair fall worse
- Crash dieting and rapid weight loss — shedding often starts 2–3 months later (telogen effluvium).
- Very low-protein diets, including poorly planned vegetarian or vegan diets.
- Fever, illness, surgery or childbirth in the last few months.
- Untreated thyroid problems, anaemia, PCOS and some medicines.
- Tight hairstyles, harsh treatments and frequent heat styling, which break hair rather than stopping growth.
When to get tested
If heavy shedding lasts more than three months, ask your doctor about a blood count, ferritin, thyroid function (TSH), vitamin D and B12. Diet works best once a deficiency has been found and corrected.
See a doctor promptly if you notice
Round bald patches, broken hairs with scaly or red scalp, hair loss with weight loss or extreme tiredness, or sudden hair loss in a child. These need a diagnosis, not just a diet change.
How homeopathy supports hair
In homeopathy, hair fall is treated as part of the whole person: digestion, hormones, stress and sleep are assessed together, and a constitutional remedy is chosen individually. Remedies such as Natrum Muriaticum, Phosphorus, Lycopodium, Sepia and Silicea are among those considered. See our hair fall treatment page or hair fall treatment in Pune.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which food is best for hair growth?▾
There is no single best food. Hair grows best on a diet with enough protein at every meal, iron-rich foods eaten with vitamin C, zinc from seeds and pulses, and omega-3 fats from flax, walnuts or fish.
How long does it take for diet changes to show in hair?▾
Hair grows about 1 cm a month, and shedding from an old trigger can continue for a few months. Expect 3–6 months before diet changes show as less shedding and new growth.
Do biotin supplements help hair grow?▾
Only if you are actually deficient, which is rare. Biotin can also interfere with thyroid and other blood tests, so tell your doctor before testing if you take it.
Can a vegetarian diet support healthy hair?▾
Yes, if it includes enough protein (dal, chana, rajma, paneer, curd, soya), iron with vitamin C, and B12 — which many vegetarians need as a supplement prescribed by their doctor.
