Leucorrhea: Understanding Vaginal Discharge, Normal and Otherwise

Dr. Meera ThakurJuly 20266 min read

Some vaginal discharge is entirely normal and healthy — it's the body's natural way of cleaning and protecting itself. But when it changes in amount, colour, smell, or is accompanied by itching or discomfort, it's worth understanding why, rather than either ignoring it or feeling embarrassed to seek care.

What's Normal, and What Isn't

Clear-to-white, mild-smelling discharge that varies with the menstrual cycle is normal. Discharge that becomes profuse, thick and cottage-cheese-like, greenish or grey, foul-smelling, or is accompanied by itching, burning, or pelvic pain can indicate a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, an STI, or occasionally a hormonal imbalance. A proper examination — sometimes with a swab test — helps identify the exact cause.

Discharge after menopause, with pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding between periods should be evaluated by a gynaecologist promptly.

Key Insight

Chronic, recurring leucorrhea (once infection has been ruled out or treated) often reflects a constitutional tendency toward weak pelvic tissue tone or hormonal imbalance — this is where homeopathy offers the most lasting benefit.

Commonly Indicated Remedies

Sepia

Yellow-green discharge, sagging pelvic sensation, exhaustion, irritability

Pulsatilla

Thick, creamy, bland discharge, changeable, worse before periods

Kreosotum

Acrid, excoriating discharge causing itching and burning

Alumina

Profuse, transparent, watery discharge, worse before periods

Borax

Discharge like egg white, warm, worse mid-cycle

Natrum Muriaticum

Discharge alternating with vaginal dryness, linked to emotional stress

Accurate remedy selection depends on the exact character of the discharge and your broader constitutional picture — a consultation ensures the right match.

Everyday Care That Helps

Wearing breathable cotton underwear, avoiding scented soaps and douching (which disrupt natural vaginal flora), staying well hydrated, and maintaining good hygiene without over-washing all support vaginal health. If an infection is diagnosed, continue any prescribed treatment alongside constitutional care.
